If given the choice, most pet owners would opt to feed their pets the best, healthiest food available.  But, does selecting the “best” mean it is going to cost you an arm and a leg?  It doesn’t have to.

Providing your beloved pet with healthy options can simply mean being a savvy shopper.  By taking time to read the pet food label on your pet’s food can eliminate many options sitting on the shelves.

Don’t let that idea scare you.  While you may see a lot of big words under the guise of ingredients on a food label, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know which foods to steer clear of.  There are six easy phrases to look for.  If you see any of the following items in your list of ingredients, move on to find an option that doesn’t:

1.  By-product

2.  Animal fat

3.  Animal digest

4.  Ethoxyquin

5.  BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole)

6.  BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)
